Grammar / Notes

  • Wollen wir …? (shall we?) Wollen wir …? makes a suggestion to do something together (‘shall we …?’). The conjugated modal opens the question and the infinitive stands at the end. Anna ist ein bisschen traurig und sagt: „Wollen wir draußen sitzen?“(“Anna is a little sad and says: ‘Shall we sit outside?’”)
  • es gibt + accusative es gibt says that something exists or is available (‘there is’, ‘there are’). What exists stands in the accusative: Es gibt einen Park. Sie möchten am Fenster sitzen, aber es gibt dort keinen freien Tisch.(“They would like to sit by the window, but there is no free table there.”)
  • Direct speech with sagen sagen reports the exact words someone says. A colon follows the reporting clause and the quote stands in German quotation marks: Sie sagt: „Der Bus kommt gleich.“ Anna ist ein bisschen traurig und sagt: „Wollen wir draußen sitzen?“(“Anna is a little sad and says: ‘Shall we sit outside?’”)
  • vor + dative (location) vor is a two-way preposition. With the dative it answers Wo? and marks a location, so the article becomes der. Jonas sieht einen kleinen Tisch draußen vor der Tür.(“Jonas sees a small table outside in front of the door.”)
